21. What is an advantage of MacBike? [B. It offers many types of bikes]
We offer the newest bicycles in a wide variety, including basic bikes..., bikes with hand brake and gears..., bikes with child seats, and children's bikes"——基本款/手刹排挡款/儿童座椅款/儿童车,车型多样。
22. How much do you pay for renting a bike with hand brake and three gears for two days? [C. €22.75]
解题:两步取数:① 题干"hand brake and three gears"锁定表格左列(Hand Brake, Three Gears);② "for two days" = 1 day (24 hours) €14.75 + Each additional day €8.00 = €22.75。
23. Where does the guided city tour start? [D. Dam Square]
The tour departs from Dam Square every hour on the hour"——depart from = 从……

C 25. D 26. B 27. A

24What can we learn about John from the first two paragraphs?
25Why did John put the sludge into the tanks?
26What is the author's purpose in mentioning Fuzhou?
27What is the basis for John's work?

When John Todd was a child, he loved to explore the woods around his house, observing how nature solved problems.24 A dirty stream, for example, often became clear after flowing through plants and along rocks where tiny creatures lived. When he got older, John started to wonder if this process could be used to clean up the messes people were making.24

After studying agriculture, medicine, and fisheries in college, John went back to observing nature and asking questions. Why can certain plants trap harmful bacteria (细菌)? Which kinds of fish can eat cancer-causing chemicals? With the right combination of animals and plants, he figured, maybe he could clean up waste the way nature did. He decided to build what he would later call an eco-machine.

The task John set for himself was to remove harmful substances from some sludge (污泥). First, he constructed a series of clear fiberglass tanks connected to each other. Then he went around to local ponds and streams and brought back some plants and animals. He placed them in the tanks and waited. Little by little, these different kinds of life got used to one another and formed their own ecosystem. After a few weeks, John added the sludge.25 He was amazed at the results. The plants and animals in the eco-machine took the sludge as food and began to eat it! Within weeks, it had all been digested, and all that was left was pure water.

Over the years, John has taken on many big jobs. He developed a greenhouse-like facility that treated sewage (污水) from 1,600 homes in South Burlington. He also designed an eco-machine to clean canal water in Fuzhou, a city in southeast China.26

"Ecological design" is the name John gives to what he does. "Life on Earth is kind of a box of spare parts for the inventor," he says. "You put organisms in new relationships and observe what's happening. Then you let these new systems develop their own ways to self-repair."27

1-2"loved to explore... observing how nature solved problems" + "went back to observing nature and asking questions. Why can certain plants...?"
3"He placed them in the tanks and waited... formed their own ecosystem. After a few weeks, John added the sludge."
5"He also designed an eco-machine to clean canal water in Fuzhou"(承接 South Burlington,同属"大项目"列举)推理题 → 判断举例的论证作用
27段 6"Then you let these new systems develop their own ways to self-repair"细节题 → 锚定核心理念句

When he got older, John started to wonder if this process could be used to clean up the messes people were making.

枝叶(先砍掉):"When he got older"——when 时间从句;"if this process could be used to clean up..."——if 引导的宾语从句(wonder 的内容);"the messes people were making"——省略 that 的定语从句,嵌在 if 从句之内(从句里再套从句,两层嵌套)

John started to wonder (about this).

24. What can we learn about John from the first two paragraphs? [C. He had an inquiring mind]
1 "loved to explore... observing how nature solved problems"、长大后 "started to wonder";段 2 "went back to observing nature and asking questions. Why can certain plants...? Which kinds of fish...?"——一连串问句 = 好奇心、探究心。
25. Why did John put the sludge into the tanks? [D. To test the eco-machine]
解题:按段 3 的动作顺序读:先建 tanks → 放入动植物 → 等待"formed their own ecosystem"(生态成型)→ 然后才 "added the sludge" → 结果"took the sludge as food... all that was left was pure water"。
26. What is the author's purpose in mentioning Fuzhou? [B. To show an application of John's idea]
解题:看 Fuzhou 出现的位置:段 5 开头 "Over the years, John has taken on many big jobs",先列 South Burlington 的 1,600 户污水设施,再列福州运河水治理——两个都是 eco-machine 落地应用的实例。
27. What is the basis for John's work? [A. Nature can repair itself]
You put organisms in new relationships and observe what's happening. Then you let these new systems develop their own ways to self-repair."——"让新系统自行修复" = 他工作的立足点:大自然能自我修复。

书籍前言说明文 · 线索:本书目标(论证 + 教会采纳数字极简)→ part one(哲学基础 + digital declutter 方法 + 2018 实验)→ part two(可持续生活方式 + practices 工具箱)

B 29. A 30. C 31. A

28What is the book aimed at?
29What does the underlined word "declutter" in paragraph 3 mean?
30What is presented in the final chapter of part one?
31What does the author suggest readers do with the practices offered in part two?

The goal of this book is to make the case for digital minimalism, including a detailed exploration of what it asks and why it works, and then to teach you how to adopt this philosophy if you decide it's right for you.28

To do so, I divided the book into two parts. In part one, I describe the philosophical foundations of digital minimalism, starting with an examination of the forces that are making so many people's digital lives increasingly intolerable, before moving on to a detailed discussion of the digital minimalism philosophy.

Part one concludes by introducing my suggested method for adopting this philosophy: the digital declutter.29 This process requires you to step away from optional online activities for thirty days.29 At the end of the thirty days, you will then add back a small number of carefully chosen online activities that you believe will provide massive benefits to the things you value.

In the final chapter of part one, I'll guide you through carrying out your own digital declutter. In doing so, I'll draw on an experiment I ran in 2018 in which over 1,600 people agreed to perform a digital declutter. You'll hear these participants' stories and learn what strategies worked well for them, and what traps they encountered that you should avoid.30

The second part of this book takes a closer look at some ideas that will help you cultivate (培养) a sustainable digital minimalism lifestyle. In these chapters, I examine issues such as the importance of solitude (独处) and the necessity of cultivating high-quality leisure to replace the time most now spend on mindless device use. Each chapter concludes with a collection of practices, which are designed to help you act on the big ideas of the chapter. You can view these practices as a toolbox meant to aid your efforts to build a minimalist lifestyle that works for your particular circumstances.31

31段 5"You can view these practices as a toolbox meant to aid your efforts"细节题 → 锚定工具箱比喻句

28是(39 词)是(what/why 并列宾从 + how 宾从内嵌 if 从句)是✅ 攻关
30是(24 词)是(省略 that 定从 + in which 定从两处)是✅ 攻关
31是(31 词)否(单一省略 that 定从 the time most now spend)是❌ 跳过(句库仍收录精读)

原句(28 题锚定):The goal of this book is to make the case for digital minimalism, including a detailed exploration of what it asks and why it works, and then to teach you how to adopt this philosophy if you decide it's right for you.

枝叶(先砍掉):"including a detailed exploration of what it asks and why it works"——including 短语,内含 what / why 并列宾语从句(详述"它要求什么、为何有效");"and then to teach you how to adopt this philosophy"——与 to make the case 并列的第二个目标,内含 how 宾语从句;"if you decide it's right for you"——if 条件从句(嵌在 how 从句后,两层嵌套)

The goal of this book is to make the case for digital minimalism and then to teach you.

Part one concludes by introducing my suggested method for adopting this philosophy: the digital declutter.

破题钥匙在下一句的定义:"step away from optional online activities for thirty days"(远离可选线上活动 30 天)

Part one concludes by introducing my suggested method.

推出:declutter = 清空(可选线上活动)= Clear-up(第 29 题答案的来源;词义题的钥匙在"命名句 + 定义句"两连读)。

At the end of the thirty days, you will then add back a small number of carefully chosen online activities that you believe will provide massive benefits to the things you value.

枝叶(先砍掉):"that you believe will provide massive benefits..."——that 定语从句修饰 activities,内嵌 "you believe"(believe 后省略 that 的插入从句,定语从句里再套从句,两层嵌套);"the things (that) you value"——省略 that 的定语从句

You will then add back a small number of online activities.

In doing so, I'll draw on an experiment I ran in 2018 in which over 1,600 people agreed to perform a digital declutter.

枝叶(先砍掉):"In doing so"——介词短语(承上:指导你做 declutter 这件事);"I ran in 2018"——省略 that 的定语从句修饰 experiment;"in which over 1,600 people agreed to perform..."——in which 定语从句(同样挂在 experiment 上,两处从句)

I'll draw on an experiment.

推出:末章素材 = 2018 年 1,600 人参与 declutter 的真实实验 → 下句 "You'll hear these participants' stories" = practical examples(第 30 题答案的来源)。

You'll hear these participants' stories and learn what strategies worked well for them, and what traps they encountered that you should avoid.

枝叶(先砍掉):"what strategies worked well for them"——what 宾语从句(学到什么);"and what traps they encountered"——第二个 what 宾语从句,与上一个并列;"that you should avoid"——that 定语从句修饰 traps(嵌在第二个 what 从句内,两层嵌套)

You'll hear stories and learn what worked and what traps they encountered.

原句(31 题锚定 · 句库精读句):In these chapters, I examine issues such as the importance of solitude (独处) and the necessity of cultivating high-quality leisure to replace the time most now spend on mindless device use.

框架:此句 31 词但只有一处省略 that 的定语从句("the time most now spend"),按 AND 口径跳过、句库仍收录精读:"such as A and B"——并列名词短语举例(独处的重要性 + 高质量休闲的必要性);"to replace the time most now spend on..."——不定式表目的,内含省略定从(用高质量休闲替换"无意识刷手机"的时间)

I examine issues.

原句(篇结构语境句 · 句库精读句):In part one, I describe the philosophical foundations of digital minimalism, starting with an examination of the forces that are making so many people's digital lives increasingly intolerable, before moving on to a detailed discussion of the digital minimalism philosophy.

框架:此句 40 词但仅有一处 that 定语从句("the forces that are making..."),按 AND 口径跳过、句库仍收录精读:"starting with... before moving on to..."——两个分词短语交代 part one 的展开顺序(先查"是什么把数字生活变得难以忍受",再细讲哲学);"philosophical foundations"——哲学基础

I describe the philosophical foundations of digital minimalism.

28. What is the book aimed at? [B. Advocating a simple digital lifestyle]
The goal of this book is to make the case for digital minimalism... and then to teach you how to adopt this philosophy"——为数字极简主义辩护并教你采纳 → 提倡一种简单的数字生活方式。
29. What does the underlined word "declutter" in paragraph 3 mean? [A. Clear-up]
解题:词义题的钥匙在"命名句 + 定义句"两连读:命名句 "my suggested method...: the digital declutter",紧接着定义句 "This process requires you to step away from optional online activities for thirty days"——远离可选线上活动 = 把数字生活"清空"一下 = Clear-up。
30. What is presented in the final chapter of part one? [C. Practical examples]
4:"In the final chapter of part one, I'll guide you through carrying out your own digital declutter. In doing so, I'll draw on an experiment I ran in 2018 in which over 1,600 people agreed to perform a digital declutter. You'll hear these participants' stories..."——末章素材是 1,600 人的真实经历。
31. What does the author suggest readers do with the practices offered in part two? [A. Use them as needed]
You can view these practices as a toolbox meant to aid your efforts to build a minimalist lifestyle that works for your particular circumstances"——工具箱 + 配合你自己具体情况 = 按需取用。

On March 7, 1907, the English statistician Francis Galton published a paper which illustrated what has come to be known as the "wisdom of crowds" effect. The experiment of estimation he conducted showed that in some cases, the average of a large number of independent estimates could be quite accurate.

This effect capitalizes on the fact that when people make errors, those errors aren't always the same. Some people will tend to overestimate, and some to underestimate. When enough of these errors are averaged together, they cancel each other out, resulting in a more accurate estimate.32 If people are similar and tend to make the same errors, then their errors won't cancel each other out. In more technical terms, the wisdom of crowds requires that people's estimates be independent. If for whatever reasons, people's errors become correlated or dependent, the accuracy of the estimate will go down.

But a new study led by Joaquin Navajas offered an interesting twist (转折) on this classic phenomenon. The key finding of the study was that when crowds were further divided into smaller groups that were allowed to have a discussion, the averages from these groups were more accurate than those from an equal number of independent individuals.33 For instance, the average obtained from the estimates of four discussion groups of five was significantly more accurate than the average obtained from 20 independent individuals.

In a follow-up study with 100 university students, the researchers tried to get a better sense of what the group members actually did in their discussion. Did they tend to go with those most confident about their estimates? Did they follow those least willing to change their minds?34 This happened some of the time, but it wasn't the dominant response. Most frequently, the groups reported that they "shared arguments and reasoned together". Somehow, these arguments and reasoning resulted in a global reduction in error. Although the studies led by Navajas have limitations and many questions remain, the potential implications for group discussion and decision-making are enormous.35

On March 7, 1907, the English statistician Francis Galton published a paper which illustrated what has come to be known as the "wisdom of crowds" effect.

枝叶(先砍掉):"On March 7, 1907"——时间状语;"which illustrated..."——which 定语从句修饰 paper;"what has come to be known as the 'wisdom of crowds' effect"——what 宾语从句,嵌在 which 从句之内(从句里再套从句,两层嵌套)

Francis Galton published a paper.

The experiment of estimation he conducted showed that in some cases, the average of a large number of independent estimates could be quite accurate.

枝叶(先砍掉):"he conducted"——省略 that 的定语从句修饰 experiment;"that in some cases, the average... could be quite accurate"——that 宾语从句(showed 的内容),内含 in some cases 插入(两处从句)

The experiment showed that the average could be quite accurate.

原句(33 题锚定):The key finding of the study was that when crowds were further divided into smaller groups that were allowed to have a discussion, the averages from these groups were more accurate than those from an equal number of independent individuals.

枝叶(先砍掉):"that when crowds were further divided into smaller groups..., the averages..."——that 表语从句(finding 的内容);"that were allowed to have a discussion"——that 定语从句修饰 smaller groups(嵌在表语从句内);"than those from an equal number of independent individuals"——比较结构(those = the averages)

The key finding of the study was that the averages from these groups were more accurate.

For instance, the average obtained from the estimates of four discussion groups of five was significantly more accurate than the average obtained from 20 independent individuals.

框架:此句 27 词但无从句嵌套(分词后置 + 比较结构),按 AND 口径跳过、句库仍收录精读:"obtained from the estimates of four discussion groups of five"——过去分词短语后置(4 个 5 人讨论组的估计所得平均);"significantly more accurate than..."——比较级 + 程度副词

The average was significantly more accurate.

Although the studies led by Navajas have limitations and many questions remain, the potential implications for group discussion and decision-making are enormous.

Although the studies led by Navajas have limitations and many questions remain"——让步从句(led by 分词修饰 studies,从句内两个并列分句);"the potential implications... are enormous"——主句落点

The potential implications are enormous.

32. What is paragraph 2 of the text mainly about? [B. The underlying logic of the effect]
33. Navajas' study found that the average accuracy could increase even if ________. [D. estimates were not fully independent]
34. What did the follow-up study focus on? [C. The discussion process]
4:"the researchers tried to get a better sense of what the group members actually did in their discussion"——研究者自己抛出两个问句("跟着最有信心的人走?""
35. What is the author's attitude toward Navajas' studies? [D. Approving]
Although the studies... have limitations and many questions remain, the potential implications for group discussion and decision-making are enormous"——让步只占半句,落点词是 enormous(巨大的)。前文还铺垫了 "resulted in a global reduction in error"——全是正面评价信号。
